Can You Dig It?
As I was playing around with a couple of members last weekend, I was asked the question: What does the number after the loft of the club mean and how does it effect my shots? I thought this was a great question because of all of the new technology that is available today. I want to clarify bounce and dig in this article.
All wedges are created with bounce. Different models and lofts have more or less bounce. We really only look at the effective bounce of the club and do not measure dig. Each wedge will be designed for different playing conditions. If you are playing in soft or wet playing conditions then more bounce will play better in these conditions. If turf conditions are hard and dry, less bounce will preform better.
Bounce will allow the golf club to bounce off the turf at impact. This is why you want to have a wedge with more bounce in soft conditions. If the course is soft and you do not have much bounce the club, the club will dig into the ground and provide you with a nice slab of divot. On the other side of that, if the course is dry and firm the bounce will cause the club to bounce and result in a thin or "Skulled" shot.
There is a lot to understanding all the clubs today but this is the basics of Bounce. If you have any questions, please email me at jwparksgolf@myfairpoint.net
Play Well,
